Brussels, July 14, 2010
Mr. Ladislav Miko, former Minister of Environment of the Czech Republic, who is currently again working as the director of conservation at the General Directorate for Environment of the European Commission in Brussels, met on July 14, 2010 in Brussels with Mr. František Nekovář, president of the ONG World’s Green Lungs, and Ms. Martina Pásková from the Department of Environmental Policy of the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic.
Ms. Martina Pásková informed the Director Miko about the auspices of the Ministry of Environment of the reforestation project in Democratic Republic of the Congo in Maniema Province and about the support of her department. In a context of this comprehensive project she emphasized especially an intention to develop ecotourism – pirogue ecosafari on the river Kasuku and to establish a geological park in Maniema Province. She was also drawing attention to the research benefits of this primarily reforestation project, because it is piloting
the methodology for evaluating ecosystem services of forest biotopes, whose development was funded by the Ministry of Environment.
Mr. František Nekovář handed over to the Director Miko a personal letter from Mr. José E. B. Endundo, the Minister of Environment, Nature Conservation and Tourism of Democratic Republic of the Congo. Furthermore, he informed him about development and activities associated with implementing of the reforestation ‘Agroforestry Project’ and the agenda of the first expedition ‘Kindu 2010’, which will be held in August. The first area of forest will be planned using mycorrhiza cultures on this occasion.
Mr. Ladislav Miko repeated his support for the Agroforestry Project and highlighted the funding and promotion opportunities of this global research implementation project and also clarified some related administrative procedures.
